As I said, before debatching a mail download, Pluto backs up the mail download and renames all the other backup directories, so the previous download does not get overwritten. And in my experience will place a second (and third, fourth if asked) copy of the same e-mail if it is fed with the same raw e-mail. -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Need a hotel? <http://www.hrs.com/?client=en__blue&customerId=416873103>

If the message is too big for Pluto to handle then you need to stop Pluto from seeing it. Configure Hermes with a mazimum size, as detailed already in this thread. If Hermes' message list window opens after a fetch and reports an oversize message, if it's bigger than Pluto's maximum size then quit Pluto before ticking the box to fetch it and clicking Execute. After the mail has been fetched you will find the file in the directory !NetFetch.Apps.!Hermes.MailDir.mailin.spool. You can then load this into Attacher. Remove the file before running Pluto again. Ah, that sounds less user-friendly than POPStar.[1] > After the mail has been fetched you will find the file in > the directory > !NetFetch.Apps.!Hermes.MailDir.mailin.spool. You can then > load this into Attacher. I would suggest putting a line such as the following into Hermes !Run file Filer_OpenDir $.....!NetFetch.Apps.!Hermes.MailDir.mailin.spool 688 310 200 400 which will place a small window towards the bottom of your desktop, so that you can easily see exactly what Hermes is downloading. ---------------------------------- [1] When POPStar finds an oversize message on the server it stops downloading and throws up a dialgue box, from which I have the choice of downloading it anyway, skipping it for the moment, or deleting it off the server. If I choose the last option, I have to confirm that I do want to delete. POPStar also shows me the size of the e-mail, the sender and the subject line, so it is pretty easy to make a decision, and the decision time is also configurable. The default is to skip large e-mails, so that they are just left on the server while the smaller stuff is downloaded. This makes it very simple to control which e-mails are downloaded and when. -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Need a hotel? <http://www.hrs.com/?client=en__blue&customerId=416873103>

Hermes does exactly as you describe except that it doesn't halt the mail fetch for an oversize message but reports it afterwards. So if you don't happen to be watching out for every mail fetch you will at least get all the acceptable mail in your inbox, where you can be reading it while your multi-megabyte messages are downloaded if you choose to fetch them. POPStar will offer me the e-mail each time it checks that particular mailbox. Certain other e-mail software does not do that, making it much harder to delete spam off the server. > So if you don't happen to be watching out for > every mail fetch you will at least get all the acceptable > mail in your inbox, where you can be reading it while > your multi-megabyte messages are downloaded if you choose > to fetch them. Sorry if I was not clear. POPStar stops the download *temporarily* - the length of time is configurable, I have it set to 15s - and after that time is up, it continues to fetch the ordinarily sized e-mail. -- Russell http://www.russell-hafter-holidays.co.uk Russell Hafter Holidays E-mail to enquiries at our domain Need a hotel? <http://www.hrs.com/?client=en__blue&customerId=416873103>

I much prefer to see all my suspicious mails in one list rather than have to interrupt what I'm doing each time it comes across one, and then have to decide quickly on the spur of the moment what to do with it. I can go through the list in my own time marking each one to be fetched, deleted or deferred and then execute the whole batch in one go. Alan -- RISC OS - you know it makes cents

How can one tell if this the case? I've had 500k e-mails fail to download and debatch and conversely, without any observable reason, perhaps within the same day, 2,500k e-mail will download and debatch successfully. That is, all within the Hermes max size configuration. The problem seems to be independent of the setting of Hermes configured max size. I just don't get it! > Configure Hermes with a mazimum size, as detailed already in this thread. > If Hermes' message list window opens after a fetch and reports an > oversize message, if it's bigger than Pluto's maximum size then quit > Pluto before ticking the box to fetch it and clicking Execute. > After the mail has been fetched you will find the file in the directory > !NetFetch.Apps.!Hermes.MailDir.mailin.spool. Baffled! I'd try setting the maximum size to 8000kb and using your Argonet webmail to get at the others. I'm using Pluto 3.04e which is happy with email sizes up to at least 8000kb, I remember that earlier versions couldn't handle files of this size but when that was changed I don't remember. You need to use your browser to get to http://email.orpheusnet.co.uk/src/login.php Just put in your username and password and away you go. If you don't have your username and password then you'll have to contact Orpheus for them. Works fine with Netsurf and Oregano. Alan [Snip] -- Alan Calder, Milton Keynes, UK.

Thanks Alan and Russell. Sometimes the little grey cells just fail to work at all. 8-) However, there are puzzling issues.
