Far too obvious. Based on the above, I had tried
http://mobile.twitter.com/#!/purleyhosting and got nowhere.

Presumably @ColinTheMathmo (Colin Wright) is someone who
understands Twitter as a way of communicating? Annoying
though, that you cannot see the whole conversation on one
page, just one side or the other!

It looks like a serious server problem, but if it is just
the one server, I am not sure why everything should be down.
I had understood from Neil that my websites were not all on
the same server; similarly for e-mail.

thanks, Ian. that mobile version of Twit does the trick in Netsurf.

for those who may understandably prefer to remain twit-innocent, here
is what the Purley folk have warbled so far; it's good to hear that
urgent repair work is progressing:

New server install going well. cPanel install progressing.
User data restore from off-site backup in progress ready for
     import.

Follow our twitter feed for status updates. Memory failure
over weeked caused major disc corruption. We're restoring
     services

[Grrr, fine to say status reports are on Twitter. but where do they
say so? on Twitter.]

Update sent at 8.30am [check your feed]. Yes, major
problems, initiating restore procedures onto different
server capacity and will restore user data as the day
     progresses [2/2]

Memory issue on server looks to have caused considerable
damage..server unstable to the point of being unusable.
     Provisioning addition [1/2]

server currently won't stay up so mail queues not emptying.
     Work continuing to stablise it.

Memory error appears to have be caused by a faulty DIM.
Server up and running but DIM reporting critical error rates

server6 issue appears to be out of swap memory. Services
     coming up as we speak.

Server problems current under investigation. Apologies for
     the extended downtime

Now that pretty much everything is up + running again...

(though I am receiving a steady trickle of spam, in a way
that has never happened before. Last night Neil did post on
Twitter that "A few tidy-ups still to do such as spam
filtering configuration.")

... perhaps the time is ripe for there to be some discussion
here, preferably (and if possible) with contributions from
ISPs, as how best to handle communication with customers in
the event of something like this happening again?

Personally I would like to see postings to a newsgroup
(ideally) or mailing list where both sides of the
converstion can be seen together, rather than the one sided
conversation got from Twitter.

Another approach could be based on what Paul Vigay at least
hinted at doing, in that he did maintain a mirror of the
Orpheus Internet status page on a completely different
server.

Either way, of course, requires the ISP to make
announcements when things do go badly wrong.

Here here! I've seen a few providers with status announcements days old.

I'm not sure that an ISP will want to 'spam' a newsgroup with an outage
message, but I certainly think that a mirror page is a good idea.
Certainly it wouldn't hurt the smaller ISPs to offer to mirror each
other's status pages. Sure, everybody will be "nah, we're good, no need,
we'll never be out like that". Which is akin to "backup? why bother
backing up?" in levels of cluelessness. ;-)

Best wishes,

Rick.

After posting I realised that what I was thinkimg of was an
NG dedicated to the particular ISP. Argonet had them,
Orpheus had them, PlusNet, AFAIK still has them.

So you simply subscribe to goodisp.announce, or whatever it
is called. Perhaps with a weekly posting, which, if there
has been anything that might have been mentioned on a status
page could carry the same info.

Simples.

But if goodisp goes belly up, you couldn't access goodisp.announce.

On the other hand, if you have a smartphone with a twitter app, you would
get the twitter announcement.

Until their servers fall over, which is what happened here.

Much as I hate to say it, the Twitter solution does seem a good one. The
ISP relies on not having a problem at the same time as Twitter, and anyone
can read the Twitter feed.

The Argonet groups, while not carried by every news feed,
were not restricted to Argonet subscribers.

Freeserve used to have publicly available newsgroups too - I
subscribed for a cpuple of years, and I never had anything
to do with Freeserve.

The Orpheus groups were on the Orpheus server, possibly why
they never took off.

I do not have the time at the moment to check what the
current situation with PlusNet is, but will look later.

All of these are ISP's but Purley is not an ISP, its a hosting
company, somewhat different.

Anyone? I would rather not have anything to do with Twitter but
if I had to, how do I read it if my internet connection is
'down' and I have no access to a smart phone?

My present ISP, TalkTalk, had problems with servers a couple of
weekends ago, but they had added a short voice message, audible
immediately on phoning the help line (before the extensive
menus), which was a useful warning not to waste much time on the
phone.

If it was your "internet connection" you would contact your ISP -
Orpheus/TalkTalk in your case, but since Purley is NOT an ISP, its a
hosting company, you could find out from the twitter feed (which is
independent of the Purley servers in this case), since you would still
have interent connection via your ISP - TalkTalk.

It would indeed have been useful if the phone message was available
sooner.

I am completely baffled by that :-(

I was trying to get some light on the age-old and basic problem
of getting information on the state of one's internet service
after a failure of that service (raised already by Russell
Hafter I think). It's a general problem; not specific to Purley
Hosting.

Until Twitter was mentioned I had assumed the only means of
communication remaining was the phone. I now want to know /how/
to contact Twitter without an internet connection or a fancy
phone, and also how to read both sides of the discussion.

Brian.

I do not see those anywhere. Perhaps they are only available

I think that's probably true.

I turned off Javascript in Firefox and the speech balloon is still visible
but nothing happens when it's clicked on.

Netsurf 2.7 on Ubuntu 11.04 dies when I try to view the page. Netsurf 1.2
doesn't show any tweets.
