They must have changed something then since I gave up on Thunderbird a
couple of months after the 3.x releases. The last time I checked it was
still impossible to disable tabs completely. Plus opening the calendar
in a separate window was still rather contrived.

The other thing I dislike is not being able to configure preview panes
off, completely, forever. This is on thing that Outlook has allowed me
to do for years, albeit you have to do it for every folder. The versions
of Apple Mail and TB 3+ I have used only allow you to drag the preview
pane down but never disable it completely.
