I don't remember that from when I used to subscribe. Nor problems when I
ran an (admittedly low volume) discussion group.

Pluto, as a reader, seems to handle them perfectly based on the list's
address. It probably pre-dates some of the fancy header stuff.  ;-)

When I did briefly run a discussion group, I don't remember having a
problem posting or replying to the group myself. Your assumption, I
think, is wrong.

Or is it the way in which the list maintainer is using Pluto to interact
with the list?

These days I use the automated distribution lists to send old-fashioned
newsletters to old-fashioned people who haven't worked out how to
interact with facebook yet. They are missing out but I haven't felt the
need to host a discussion group for a long time and not because nobody
will talk with me, there just aren't enough facebookaphobes to worry
about.  ;-)
