One of the biggest differences between my operation and the University's datacenter was, with very few exceptions, if it didn't come with the OS or get provided by some commercial entity (Minitab, BMDP, SPSS) they did not install it. The only exception I know for sure was Pine. > >> I have FTP >> but that doesn't do directories recursively (at least not that I know of). > > FTP to what? FTP is simple. Wget can do recursive FTP. I would love it if someone could tell me how to do it with backup. Including how to ftp the backup so that it reamins usable if I put it back onto another VMS system in the future (which I will be able to do when I get my life settled after I retire from the Army later this year). > >> Any help appreciated as I have quite a bit of stuff (including a lot of >> my Ada work) on this machine and would hate to just loose it. > > You mean "lose" it? > > A clearer description of the actual requirements (and > constraints) might help. Ideally, I need a standard VMS way of doing this when the destiniation is not going to be a VMS system. having given it some thought, I imagine there are faculty who need/want to save old stuff as well and they are more VMS-clueless than even I am. Someone mentioned DCL. I can see myself having to write a rather large shell script to grab all my stuff but I certainly can't see doing that for everyone else and they couldn't do it themselves. :-) bill -- Bill Gunshannon | de-moc-ra-cy (di mok' ra see) n.
