One of the biggest differences between my operation and the University's
datacenter was, with very few exceptions, if it didn't come with the OS
or get provided by some commercial entity (Minitab, BMDP, SPSS) they did
not install it.  The only exception I know for sure was Pine.

I will look at wget but if I don't do it to another VMS system I expect
problems.

I have yet to see one of them that can corerctly deal with VMS style
directories, especially version numbers.

Gathering all these options.  Hopefully they won't pull the plug too
soon so I have time to get thru this.

I had forgoten VMSTAR.  That's another option.  I would love it if
someone could tell me how to do it with backup.  Including how to
ftp the backup so that it reamins usable if I put it back onto another
VMS system in the future (which I will be able to do when I get my
life settled after I retire from the Army later this year).

Ideally, I need a standard VMS way of doing this when the destiniation
is not going to be a VMS system.  having given it some thought, I
imagine there are faculty who need/want to save old stuff as well and 
they are more VMS-clueless than even I am.

Someone mentioned DCL.  I can see myself having to write a rather large
shell script to grab all my stuff but I certainly can't see doing that
for everyone else and they couldn't do it themselves.  :-)
