In such cases you can try the Plop boot manager:
http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager.html#download

It is a bootmanager that can be on a CD or a floppy disk. It brings USB 
drivers and supports booting from a USB stick without the bios having to 
support it.

Puppy Linux has something similar, but specifically for Puppy and not so 
generic, I believe.
