There was a long list of his heretical views and he was stupid enough to return to Italy. Robert Bellarmine SJ was one of the judges in both the Bruno and Galileo trials. The Church was aware of Copernicus's theory and found it interesting. One problem was Copernicus couldn't offer any proof and his system wasn't any better than Ptolemy's theory. It was the Protestants that attacked him based on the bible. It took 70 years for it to become politicized.

The calculations are much simpler in Copernican theory than in Ptolemic nonsense. Epicycles within Epicycles and you go nowhere at high speed. And right now we know that the earth doesn't turn around the sun but that both of them are turning around a gravity center. Which is not exactly the same as the sun, which is way more complicated than turning around the sun (because you have to take care of other planets as well) and which Ptolemy had no clue at that time. We needed to wait for Newton to understand what happens and with Einstein it was questioned again. Language gets hazy and is inadequate for the description of reality. It was a convenient development to convey information between humans, expanding the range of communication beyond gestures and grunts. The problems began when we used the tool to construct a continuous narrative of the world around us and created handy structures and abstractions. There aren't two cats out in the yard. Humans use generalities to build the construct 'cat' from the reality and use that construct to say there are two of those constructs. In reality there aren't two of anything. Trying to pull yourself up with imaginary bootstraps is a difficult task and tends to result in Zen type constructs. Or, you can make the fatal flaw that Plato made when he created metaphysics and say the imaginary construct is reality.
