   Well, even plain old zip could make floppy-spanning
   archives WAY back.

   THESE days I'd rec 7zip. Does pretty much anything
   you'd ever need and it's snappier than RAR or zip
   and compresses a bit better.

   Alas a legacy of the past is that there were maybe
   50 unique compression/archive schemes - some totally
   proprietary like "Squeeze!". Finding unzippers for
   all those schemes is a hopeless task - so, hate to
   say it, some of that old data just has to be let go.
