Ball mouse. No pad needed. No movement needed. BT link, no cable.
$25 lasts forever (virtually), and that includes a single 1.5 V cell.

I have several. The wired ball mouse from LT was so popular with
the gamers that a used one sold on ebay for double what they were
new. That was before the wireless link boys got the stutter and
timeout kinks ironed out. Now wireless is just as responsive.
Greta mouse because it requires no "movement field". You move from
the keyboard to the mouse and translate the screen curcsor and then
your hand moves right back to the keyboard no pad rewuired, and easy
to carry with you. They even have little mini versions but those
suck if you are doing CAD or video or art level work that requires
fine pitch mouse movement capability.

I have yet to find a Linux Live distro or BSD install that does not
recognize it immediately. Even after a session is up.
