I did that too back in the 1990's, but Xfree86 already made the changes.

You don't, you let xorg take care of that for you.

The configuration I use would look something like this in your case:

Section "InputDevice"
  Identifier "system-keyboard"
  Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
  Option "XkbModel" "pc104"
  Option "XkbLayout" "en_US"
EndSection
