Most of the desktop environments have ways of changing the keyboard
layouts. I often have to use the French AZERTY keyboard layout when
I am writing to French friends.
In Mint MATE, that entails installing a Fench keyboard layout.
Mint Menu -> System -> Preferences -> Hardware ->
Keyboard -> Layouts
It's then just a matter of switching the keyboard layout by clicking an icon
on the panel. That icon can (just!) be seen showing 'en' for the standard
ASCII layout between the HP and volume-Control icons on this image:
