   If you're CLOSE ... they just don't hold much shot.
   I think the buckshot loads are like four or five
   pellets in a row. Anyway, 'vermin gun' may be the
   best description. You might be able to shoot 45LC
   in some, but without rifling it's basically an
   olde-tyme musket.

   Precise shots sometimes use 20ga just to prove

   Well, the 'punt gun' was invented in the UK as best
   I remember ... about 4ga.

   10ga does have a place, esp in N.America, for longer-
   range fowl hunting - boosts out a LOT of shot. Kicks
   like a motherfucker though. Think there are still
   three or four name makers of the 10ga. Hmm, maybe
   that's the solution to polar bears ... a load of '0'
   buck or a huge-ass slug.

   A bit 'unsporting' too ...

   From pix I've seen, they weren't even meant to be held,
   had a sort of tang near the center point meant to be
   hooked around the rim of a boat. You fired them from
   a prone position.

   Shotgun bores are all basically the old musket bores
   from longer back. I think 28ga was .50 cal, 12ga was
   nominally the Brown Bess .75 cal.

   Wow ... forgot there was 28ga until just now ... maybe
   a bit more useful than .410
