I have a related problem.

Sometime this summer I discovered a sparrow that could not fly, it 
walked, could hop little jumps flying half a metre or so. The second 
time he entered the kitchen to the end. He was wary but not scared of 
me, so I pushed him outside, I did not want a bird trapped inside the 
house. I gave him a bit of soft bread and he ate it all.

So I bought a bird feeder and some bird food, and tried to set it up 
hidden beneath a low table for plants (half a metre high), on the 
ground. I also got an automated camera for fauna pointed at it.

Next day I looked at the photos and saw a rat eating from it.

I set up rat poison inside a 10cm diameter pipe. It ate it, but takes 
two weeks to kill.

Meanwhile, I tried to set up the feeder somewhere else. I built a half a 
meter diameter fence with two holes at ground level, and another net on 
top, and pointed the camera.

I saw pigeons eating it all, not the sparrow.

So I put the feeder at half a meter height from the ground, thinking the 
pigeons could not feed from it. The sitting stick on the feeder is too 
small for them.

The pigeons learned to fly and crash at the feeder so that it dropped 
the seeds to the floor, emptying it.

So I gave up.

I have not seen that cute sparrow again. Some neighbours have seen it, 
too, but not recently.
