The printers became de facto arbiters of 'correct' spelling and many of them came from the Netherlands and Germany. That is when we lost the 'Thorn' letter = Þ, (th) often written instead as a 'Y' - hence Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe' etc. Printers didnt have it in their fonts. Still more had a smattering of Latin or Greek and would ponce up their words to make them look Latin or Greek, when they were not. I do recommend the you tube channel 'Words Unravelled' for the most amusing romp through the etymology and history of words. Both American and English. The problem with English is that it's the ultimate lingua franca and a complete mongrel. Every region of the world has its own dialect, with local words and pronunciation variations. For instant I find 'Appalachian' instantly understandable as old fashioned English country speech. And some of the more European derived dialects like Cajun, far less approachable. But then anyone who can follow fast speech in Glaswegian or Liverpudlian gets a hat tip from me.
