Well, they kind of worked, and they were always hard to maintain. And 
systemd kept them working (at least as well as they did before) until they 
could be replaced with something simpler and more easily maintainable, in 
the form of a systemd service definition.

Fun fact: Microsoft also hired Guido Van Rossum, the original mastermind 
behind Python.

Nobody was forced to use it until they were convinced it was a definite 
improvement.
