That was my experience also. As the bickering started I wondered what I 
was using on my latest install. "Oh, Wayland, okay it seems to be 
working."

It's a moot point but our legacy apps used Motif so I've worked with X for 
over 20 years. Of course over those years the code has integrated the X 
system from using Atoms for inter-process communication up. Any 
theoretical use of MVC has degenerated and the widgets know altogether too 
much about the business logic. In short the whole mess isn't going to run 
on a Wayland only system and redoing it won't happen. 

Ironically all the clients use Windows, not Linux, so we install the PTC X 
server so they will chug on regardless.
