MacOS X is really nothing like Unix under the hood.  It has a UI that sort of
looks like Unix until you start looking hard and realizing that the password
file is really just the product of a secret hidden database, etc.

In some ways it's a win, because you get a kernel designed for multimedia stuff
combined with a mostly-Unix UI.
