Handy but hardly > revolutionary. There are large sums of money to be earned by convincing consumers their old appliances need to be repurchased with 'smart technology' that of course is proprietary, locks you into the producer's ecosystem, requires frequent updates, costs more, and can be easily rendered obsolete by the simple push of a software update. Fortunately, the market has so far said "F You" to the idea. And not just because manufacturers have done such a poor job of going about it. Do I really need to be able to control my home thermostat via a smartphone app during the day, from my office? Do I really want an Android interface on my refrigerator? I concede there may be cool ideas to come in this market space, but we sure haven't seen any yet that I'm aware of. Here are some smart devices I'd like: 1. ability to remotely blow out the tires of the asshole driver on my left trying to cut me off in order to turn into the exit ramp. 2. ability to remotely turn down the volume of the guy next to me on the train listening to bad music at high volume. 3. ability for my coffee maker to have the coffee ready when I awake. Oh wait, I've already got that. These guys think I want my bathroon to automatically call up some supplier and order more toilet paper when I'm getting low, and the truth is I don't want something like that at all.
