Check out hacker news (http://news.ycombinator.com). Everyone has a handle, like Slashdot, and the quality of conversation is high because mods wipe the snarky stuff right off the map. It's people who don't know each other conversing about a topic of common interest. I think there is still room on the 'net for smart people to find each other and converse about smart things. Yeah, Facebook is there too for those other types. There's still room for all the different models, if you look for them.
