I find this kind of view prevalent, and to be honest I'm surprised at
the negativity. So...

Control thermostat via a smartphone? Maybe/maybe not. I would like to
be able to extract data from it though.

Do I want an Android interface on my fridge? Not a platform war person
but yeah - would love a smart fridge that synced calendar appointments,
reminders and also allowed me to press a few presets to say that things
were going to expire. Maybe I scan the item as I put it in. Is it fresh
and so no bar code? Cool - I press the fresh produce button and select
a preset or something custom I've previously set up on an app. At some
time before expiry, let's say default is with 1/3rd of the product's
lifespan to go, I get an alarm saying food going to expire. Result? A
bit more effort when putting the shopping away, but less wasted food
(and by implication cash).

On my washing machine? God yes I want alarms and remote control on my
washing machine. Timers are ok but I want to say I'm now unexpectedly
out until 11pm, start the washing timed so it finishes about 10:45pm so
I don't end up with sodden clothes sitting there for hours before
they're hung out to dry/transferred to the dryer. Or turn on the bulbs
as I'm approaching. Or, or...you get the idea.

My main worry is security and portability of protocol. But actual
function? Yeah - smart things for me please.

Cheers,
Ian
