If you look at my SORT function, I think that you will find it to be well-written. 

Anyway, SORT is a low-level routine. This is not something that the user writes. This is something that is provided in a library for the user to use. It would normally be written in assembly-language. My novice package was written in ANS-Forth so that it wouldn't be compiler-specific (although, with a compiler-switch it can be made SwiftForth-specific so that this low-level stuff is in assembly-language).

Why are C locals "MUCH better" than Forth locals? If you mean that ANS-Forth locals are like values in that they are set with TO, then I agree, that is pretty ugly. In the CAMForth that I'm writing, my locals will be like variables, in that they put an address on the stack which be accessed with @ and !.

Anyway, how else are you going to pass the xt of the comparer function, except on the parameter stack? Everything in my novice package is reentrant --- I never use global variables.

I think that it is is important that, when code is posted on c.l.f., it should meet basic requirements of quality. When code is posted for a SORT function that only works with integers, that just induces WJ to say that Forth is a "stone-age toy" only useful for programming toilet-flushers, etc., etc.. So long as the c.l.f. crowd continues to live in the stone-age, WJ will continue to say that all Forthers are living in the stone-age.
