I don't know what you mean with "unallocated" in this context
(especially after the way you use "allocated" in the sentence before).
But if you want to reduce the amount of commited memory after a
reduction in the amount of live memory, you could mmap the unused
memory again (using MAP_FIXED), and the old mapping will be
overwritten and the old memory should be reclaimed.  At least on POSIX
systems.
