Setting an environment variable is not a good style for communicating
within a process, because it will also influence child processes.

However, while we are considering workarounds for this misfeature of
glibc, we could call mcheck().

A relatively easy-to-implement approch would be to supply a function
that converts the mcheck_status into a THROW value and then THROWs.

But given the interface of FREE it would be nicer to have FREE return
the throw value as ior (and leave it to the application to throw or do
something else).  I don't see a clean way to implement that, though.

Implementing ALLOCATE based on lower-level stuff would also be
possible (another implementation is part of my garbage collector), but
seems overkill, and worse, I doubt that our own implementation would
be as efficient.
