Its more that the cost of the self checkouts and the
rebuilding of the checkout area made that viable.

And they didn’t make the customers do anything,
the manned checkouts are still available.

Only when they are too stupid to have enough
self checkouts so they never have to be queued for.

No they don’t, the supervising monkey can run all
of them thru in one block by scanning just one and
telling the machine how many of them there are.
I do that all the time when buying in bulk.

while the monkey scans the items with the manned checkouts.

There are in fact some systems that work like that now.

Makes more sense to pay at the trolley and
not allow the use of cash. Have separate cash
taking machines for the dinosaurs to use.

It wouldn’t be that hard to make it impossible to rort in your favour.

Harder to scan the item with a camera to work out
what it is with loose fruit and veg, but not impossible.

Yes they do. And give change and have replaced ATMs
too, you can use them when you want cash and don’t
need to make any purchases if you just want cash.

I haven't used an ATM in decades. I do need some cash
for the garage sales and the farmers market and for the
cheapest fruit and veg place that will only accept cash
for transactions over $10 and I hardly ever have a total
cost higher than $10 there.
