The self checkouts ? Ours never have any label like that.

Nope, just irritating.

When the self checkouts are close there is just the
one manned checkout operating and just the one
person in that area that does everything, including
flog the cigarettes and do the returns etc.

There are other staff in the store, but just the
shelf stackers in the fresh fruit and veg area
that early and usually only the one there too.

We've just had Woolys proclaim that they are going
to sack 500 staff and close the least productive stores
and it will be interesting to see if they go the same
route. Woolys have a lot more staff up the front when
the supermarket has just opened and always open the
self checkouts at the same time as the manned ones.

The other major chain here, Super IGA, doesn’t have
any self checkouts and only has the one manned
checkout operating very early and again the one
person who does everything, flog the fags and
does the returns until the volume builds up
enough to open more checkouts.

Our Aldi is still being built, but they don’t have any
self checkouts either.

We do have one other major supermarket, Foodland,
but no self checkouts there either. I don’t go there
often enough just after they have opened to be
able to say how many manned checkouts they
have open initially, think it is just one too.

Woolys has been stupid enough to have two supermarkets
in our town of just 50K people, it will be interesting to see
if they close the one they have just opened after one hell
of a local shit fight to allow them to build that. It never
made any sense at all to have two in this town and even
less sense now that Aldi is now building their own now.

I'd actually get quite annoyed if it happened
much, and don’t mind at all when it is very rare.

Yeah, I do too. I do most of my supermarket shopping very
early, just after the garage sales have finished, and so there
is almost always a free self checkout when I need one except
at Coles when they haven't opened any of them that early.

Yeah, some of my mates are into U3A etc for that.
