Yes there was, I admit I just pasted an answer from a website right 
before going to bed. I see now that indeed it didn't make much sense.

I just tried it myself now using a Mint live-session and it's even 
easier than I thought. Take a look at this screenshot:

All you have to do is install the Hebrew keyboard layout via keyboard 
settings and switch to it every time you want to type in Hebrew. As soon 
as Hebrew is selected, you can type Hebrew in LibreOffice or any other 
text editor, even in a terminal. The writing direction automatically 
adapts to the selected layout, and you don't even have to change fonts 
(most fonts already contain the Hebrew script). I'm assuming you know 
the Hebrew keyboard layout or have a Hebrew keyboard?

There may be other tools available to make switching between the Hebrew 
and Latin scripts a bit easier (virtual keyboard?) but I haven't tried 
those.
