Actually it was more a question. I said I wasn't sure. But since
the only response I got was rabid hysteria from an MS shill,
I decided to check it out.

This may be what I was thinking of:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/can-i-save-my-word-or-excel-document-to-my/edeb7eec-8448-4e1d-9383-6347e1db64a0

"Here is the challenge with the Office 365 free web, it works with
onedrive only. So if you want to work on the file, the file has to be in
the onedrive folder on your device and in the cloud. If you move the
file out of the synced onedrive folder on your device, it will be
deleted in the cloud."

So apparently the files are only saved in the OneDrive
folder locally, and online, and if they're moved from the
folder they'll be deleted online. Not an intuitive approach,
to be charitable.

When Adobe went rental, the default save was online in
their special format. People in the photo newsgroup were
saying that if someone cancelled their subscription without
knowing enough to save their work out separately in common
formats would lose their work.

This sounds similar. People can apparently copy out from
OneDrive if they know to do that, but the files are
not entirely under their control, as MS are trying to present
their online office as being truly online. One more step toward
kiosk rental Windows.
