Früher[tm] war "Originalinstallationsdateien" ein .tar.gz oder so, das
man sich im $HOME entpackt hat.  Der Firefox hat sich dann ganz von
alleine regelmäßig aktualisiert, so wie er das z.B. auch unter Windows
macht.

Ah, das gibt es wohl heute auch noch, allerdings als .tar.bz2:

So kriegt man auf jedem System einen 'originalen' Firefox vorbei an
der Paketverwaltung, muss sich im Gegenzug dann aber ggf. mit
irgendwelchen Library-Problemen selber rumschlagen.
