As suggested by you and others, I've been able to set up a reverse ssh tunnel and can make it persistent by using autossh. But why does the original ssh connection die after about 10 minutes of inactivity (and have to be renewed by autossh)? Is this a security feature on the server and beyond my control (I don't have superuser privileges)?
