SOME applications aren't merely clients (skype, teamviewer come to
mind), and due to the way they bind to addresses, will not update the
remote end until a disconnect / reconnect event.

Other applications (e.g. firefox, thunderbird) are somewhat more sane
but it's considerably easier just throwing everything into the "kill it
off" bucket to be sure.
