I got something working :-)  See:
  wget -O fonts.ps http://www.pjb.com.au/comp/free/fonts.ps.txt
or:
  curl http://www.pjb.com.au/comp/free/fonts.ps.txt -o fonts.ps  

The main changes were a  5 -1 roll  just before imagemask
to get the charproc into the right place,
and some single-pixel experiments which revealed that in the
  57 {<60 90 90 70 10 60 00>}
each row has to start on a byte-boundary.  This certainly makes
the hex easier to read and write ; I suppose it must be documented
somewhere ...
