Well, that won't be the first point of disagreement I have with
the Poettering Gang:

1) The test VM I made a few years ago with Mageia 2 installed
fine, but it would not boot.  The boot process would hang for
several minutes.  Then, some hidden systemd timeout would be
exceeded and the system would continue booting without about half
of the mdadm-type RAIDs having formed.  There were no tools
installed by default on Mageia 2 to decipher the binary journal
to provide any clue as to what happened.  After installing the
required debugging tools in order to decipher the binary journal
(not an easy task on a system that did not boot up properly), all
it showed was a Gantt-chart-like sequence with no additional
information available.  It was at that point I decided that if
there ever came a time that only a handful of people on the
planet were running something other than systemd (or its
decreasingly-distant cousin, winDoze), I would be among them.

2) More recently, I have been made aware that on Ubuntu 14.04
(and likely other systems), systemd-logind silently (and
apparently without it being documented) converts multiple
soft-shutdown commands into a hard poweroff.  For example,
ipmitool retries soft-shutdown commands if they are not
acknowledged.  When systemd-logind sees the second soft-shutdown
command, it immediately does a hard poweroff, without letting the
rest of the services to cleanly shut down, unmount filesystems,
etc.  Except perhaps on a cell phone or one-person client
machine, it's entirely inappropriate for a "logind" to even be
involved with power control operations.  The only solution I know
of is to modify two configuration files to get systemd-logind
entirely out of the shutdown business and let acpid do the job it
should have been doing in the first place.

If the day comes that I can't find a Linux distribution that
works well with_OUT_ systemd, it will be time to switch to a *BSD
or other non-Linux system that still follows the general unix
philosophy.
