I applaud your trust in people, but my life experience tells me this
will only work for a while before it fails, usually in an ugly way.

Let's look again at the situation that sparked the original post: a
maintainer that, honestly, behaves in a rude way by not actually taking
care of the package and ignores users. This is the smallest way of
"being rude".

If humans were logical and devoid of emotions, it would work. But even
best intentions fail in face of pressure, stress, competition, or simply
time.
