Man kann das in   lynx.cfg    explizit angeben. Ich habe z.B. bei mir
die beiden Zeilen

VIEWER:application/pdf:gv %s&:XWINDOWS
VIEWER:application/pdf:pdftotext %s -|less:NON_XWINDOWS

drin.
