Maybe 10 years ago I watched the fire department guy try to open a
woman's car that way -- she'd locked her keys and her kid inside. The
woman said it would be OK to break the window, but it wasn't a real
emergency (screaming 2-YO is normal, not a life-threatening situation)
and he didn't want to do that -- it took him at least 15 minutes to
push something like the ruler over the top of the window (no idea why he
had to do that rather than the easy way) but he eventually got it open.
When I locked my keys inside my office one of the guys got the door open
with a plastic coffee-can lid and considerable violence. He said
everybody in New York (or maybe Chicago) knew how to do that.
