National Service was mandatory in the UK as well, but missed
that, when it was scrapped. Did apply to the RAF later, out
of tech interest, Dan Dare comics etc. At interview, seemed
to be doing ok, but then the question: Do you want to join to
serve your country, or further your career ?. I answered, to
learn something new and (indirectly) further my career. The
interviewer, a crusty old squadron leader type, moustache and
all, was horrified and that was the end of that. Perhaps nowadays
they might see the value in keen, technically capable  people
and would make space for them, but not back then. Looking back,
doubt if I would have lasted 5 minutes in the way it was then,
too rebelious, questioning everything, and still do...
