I sometimes wonder where I'd have been in life if I'd completed
mandatory military service. Here (.se) it was indeed mandatory when I
turned 18 (late 90s), but in reality, budget cuts made them only draft
maybe 10% of people, focusing on those most motivated. In 1998, along
with a busload (coachload?) of other young men, many of them classmates
from high school, I went to a naval base for a regime of testing. They
were not terribly interested in me, sending me home even during the
first day (for most, it was a two-day affair).
My father was quite insistent that I attend, which is ironic since he
himself had not handled it well. He basically badgered the company
psychologist until he was finally given a medical discharge, based on
being extremely uncomfortable handling tools of murder.
Mandatory military service was later abolished, but is now back in an
extremely "soft" version, for both genders this time. The number they're
inducting is likely well below the number of young'uns wanting to
volunteer in the first place. As I understand it, they send out a form
to everyone turning 18, asking whether they would be motivated to serve.
If you say no, you most likely won't be drafted, unless they can't fill
their quota.
