That may be true (although I don't think it is - it may be primarily written in C, but it has large swaths of code written in a multitude of different languages or utilities, as well as some assembly for targets, and much of the C code is gcc specific or reliant on implementation-dependent features). But that does not mean gcc will run on anything with a C90 compiler. And even if it /did/, it would not imply that any C90 program will run on any system with a C90 compiler. And of course gcc is just a compiler. A C90 implementation has more than that - including a library (some of which definitely cannot be written in standard C90), assembler, linker, loader, and anything else needed to generate and run the binary. > >> have no guarantees about any library support. And it doesn't actually matter if you have C90 on everything from an 8051 to an IBM mainframe when there are no useful programs that can be run on both systems. In particular, you will never have a useful C90 compiler that can be compiled and hosted on anything targeted by SDCC. >>> I would have expected an organization like the CSIRO to be tasked >>> with remedying that situation, but no government has felt it >>> desirable that the public owns the means to program. I know why the BSD and GPL fans (at least, the informed ones - some people pick those licenses without thinking) pick the licenses they do. I am asking /you/ what /you/ think people can do with your code if you release it as "public domain", that they could not do if it were released under a BSD or GPL type of license. What do you think people will want to do with it? What do /you/ want them to do with it? Do you mind that they can do things that you /don't/ want them to be able to do? >>> The fact that most people aren't willing to release their >>> software to the public domain means that they see something that >>> is possible if they do so, and they don't want that possibility >>> to exist. So SDCC and other small-system embedded compilers /are/ irrelevant to you. As are lots of other C90 compilers and targets - including perfectly good working C90 compilers for 16-bit systems like DOS. It is quite reasonable for a modern system to put 32-bit as the lowest requirement. But I question putting the 80386 as the lowest requirement - that is an arbitrary choice that is long outdated. If you had said 32-bit ARM or 32-bit RISC-V, it would have made more sense, as those are architectures that are important today. > >> Yes, C90 was an important step in programming history - but the >> world has moved on since then. And as well as trying to explain what "securing C90" means, try to explain why it matters. The world /does/ move on. History can be interesting, and backwards compatibility is important, but trying to re-create the past is rarely useful. >>> I don't think we should be straying far from assembler. OK. I thought you were meaning that C90 let you have the kind of control of generated instructions that assembly gives you - which is a myth that never seems to die. > > I think we should be aiming for efficiency. I think you should forget about efficiency. It is contrary to your other goals. If people want to generate efficient object code, they should not be using an ancient compiler with an outdated language - they should be using a modern compiler with a modern language. You are not going to write a C90 compiler that fits on all your systems and generates 80386 code that comes close to what can be achieved with C99 on gcc 10 or the latest clang, tuned for a modern processor. IMHO, it would be better to emphasis simplicity and correctness than efficiency. > >>> I think that we should have a clear roadmap for recreating >>> civilization after a natural disaster, or if we find that we've >>> been teleported to somewhere around Alpha Centauri. >> >> If you want that, you should be working with valve computers. The 80386SX is a crap architecture extended in inconsistent and inefficient ways and then cut down again in different ways. It is /horrible/ for implementing. If you want to pick an architecture that is well-suited to C, is 32-bit, and can be implemented relatively easily in a variety of ways, then RISC-V is probably the best choice. (For details of architecture, comp.arch is perhaps a better newsgroup.)
