Actually, there are very good reasons, dating back three decades, for
why "everyone is <legitimately> chary of using raw integer types". They
don't work well in code that needs to be portable and future proof. A
lesson first learned when moving from the PDP-11 to the VAX.
You (bart/hannah/malcom) refer to struct stat as an egregious example.
Here's the version of struct stat in the 1970's (Unix V7):

They screwed up in only two respects, which were fixed
a few years later, and that's with the definition of
the st_uid and st_gid fields which are now defined
as uid_t and gid_t[*] and the various time fields which
are now of type 'struct timespec' to provide higher
resolution timestamps.
[*] these were explicitly added because of the difficulties
of porting software which assumed gid's and uid's were short
(16 bits) to operating environments (e.g. the VAX) where uids/gids
were expanded to 32-bits (because 16-bits was insufficient).
By using abstract types for these, no user application would require
more than a simple compile on an architecture with different
sizes for any of the fields of the structure.
(Historical note: All the field names start with st_ to disambiguate
them from user-defined symbols in early C, where MOS (members of structure)
were top-level symbol table entries and could be used with any type of
pointer).
