With braces, there would never have been a doubt about what the code
did, or what it was intended to do - even with a quick reading and with
mixed spaces and tabs and different tab settings.
I'm with John here. I insist on braces except for a few very simple
cases on the same line, such as :
if (condition) break;
It simply and quickly eliminates several classes of very common
potential errors - in terms of writing code that doesn't do what the
author wanted, of misinterpreting code when reading it, and in terms of
maintaining and modifying code.
Programmers are human. They make mistakes in reading and writing code.
They make fewer mistakes if you have simple, clear rules to make life
easier. Then they can spend their time on useful activities like
drinking coffee, going to meetings, and hanging out on Usenet instead of
staring at the same code trying to figure out if it does what the author
intended it to do.
To me, the requirement of braces in conditionals and loops is a no-brainer.
