And the bloke wot does it plays around with compilers and optimisation settings and memory managers to try and get the best overall performance that he can. Sadly the FF types have started to get clever[1] and are trying to manage memory better[1], which conflicts with the smart memory managers, and there is a 64-bit FF build from Mozilla now, so it's not as big a deal as it was.
