I'd recommend small embedded systems development instead.  You get to
use all the tools and toys you want on the host (like a modern gcc),
while the target is limited, controlled and focused.  RAM might only be
a few KB, not MB, and you know /all/ the software on the board because
you just compiled it and downloaded it.
