While the C standard never refers to a "stack" in any way,
implementations targeting platforms which have a stack conventionally
use it for objects with automatic storage duration. The reason why a
stack is convenient for that purpose is that an object with automatic
storage duration has a lifetime that ends when the function in which
it's defined in terminated. In this context, this means that the
function where the object with automatic storage duration is defined
must never terminate until all use of that memory is over - all other
routines that make use of that memory must therefore be direct or
indirect subroutines of that functions. While there are, as you say,
"many different ways to do this", they're all rather tricky or clumsy.
