A quick check with ghci (a Haskell interpreter which does use GMP) gives: Prelude> even (3^10^7 * (3^10^7 + 1)) True (0.38 secs, 17,513,600 bytes) I ask whether the result is even to force something to be calculated without having to convert the whole number to decimal for printing. Linux's bc calculator uses it's own simple implementation because it is defined to use fixed precision floating point. bc would take ages just to calculate the exponential. -- Ben.
