I've had a look at an old phone; android 4.4.2. That uses  Google voice 
typing, and it works fine without voice input (which you can switch off, 
incidentally). I also have Gboard, but that's greyed out, presumably by 
Google and its totalitarian ways.

I'd download the first three from the Playstore, and try them all to 
find my favourite; then uninstall the ones not wanted.
