I'm guessing that people are talking about different kinds of 
third-party code, in different circumstances.  For some code, you want 
to view the third-party code as a black box - track it independently, 
built it with whatever build tools it has (or use the provided 
binaries), and attach it to your own code using the documented ABI.

For other types, you want to add the source to your own files, keep it 
there in the same source code repository, compile it together with the 
same options, use the code in debugging, etc.

Both methods have their place.
