At www.aztecmuseum.ca (the official Aztec C online museum) I see more Aztec
C compilers than on Asimov... that is for sure. (Check at www.appleoldies.ca
and www.cpm8680.com for additional Aztec C65 and CP/M projects
respectively.)

A better alternative than ProDOS or DOS 3.3 based native Apple II compilers
is a 6502 cross-compiler that runs on a modern host computer.

As far as 6502 cross-compilers, cc65 generates faster and smaller Apple II
code than Aztec C, and both provide either inline assembly or linking of
external object modules written in 6502 assembly. Mixed-language WELL
WRITTEN C with assembly is a more sensible general approach for the Apple II
from my view.

However, you would need MS-DOS or an MS-DOS emulator to use the Aztec C65
cross-development environment on a modern host.

As far as cc65, to recap from some of my previous posts, my cc65 project
samples and related documents are roughly organized as follows:

Docs - Root Directory - http://www.appleoldies.ca/cc65/docs/
Demos - Root Directory - http://www.appleoldies.ca/cc65/programs/

A PHP script automatically serves these and several other directories
related to my Apple II graphics work including my work with my various
graphics converters. Some of my "old" work on shr can be found here:

http://www.appleoldies.ca/graphics/shr/
Main Page: http://www.appleoldies.ca/graphics/

I have also provided some primitive videos (without soundtrack) on my
youtube channel to go along with my cc65 and Apple IIgs Super Hi-Res
graphics conversion demos. Some of these are listed below along with some
other related articles, but these are by no means complete... and one of
these days I am going to get some help from John Brooks to extend cc65 with
Brooks loader capability (it's on my bucket list :) In the meantime, I am
using Ron Mercer's SHRView for the 200 - palette demos...
