It's lack of popularity, compared to things like x86, stemmed entirely 
due to it costing a great deal more, and thus it was used for things 
that needed that kind of processing power.  This was in the *nix and VMS 
world, where a lot of code was in C and was already very portable and 
avoided assumptions - there were many cpu architectures in use, 
different endianness, etc.  The Alpha did not compete in the DOS/Windows 
world of assembly, Pascal, various implementation-dependent C flavours, 
etc.  (Windows NT for the Alpha was short-lived.)
