No - and I suspect you may have put your finger on it.

My last act was to replace the
(unformattable-by-Windows-because-it-was-locked) SD card into the phone and
try to format it there.

Format did not work... but then I told it to UnMount the SD card.

Left it for an hour or so and it finally came up as UnMounted.

Now it gets fun:  with the phone thinking the card is "UnMounted", was
working a-ok.

Now it's several hours later and I just checked: Settings | System | Storage
| SD Card now says it is, by implication, mounted - because "Unmount SD card"
now shows as an option.

I guess I *should* try formatting it in Windows or at least deleting a file
under Windows... but it's working now and there's no way I'm going to touch
it until my new phone arrives.

Once I have the new phone config'd and running, I'll revisit the old one and
it's "UnMounted" SD card.

My takeaway so far: do a Settings | System | Storage | Unmount SD Card before
removing the SD card.
