Try reading "The Reckoning" by David Halberstam. He contrasts the US and Japanese auto industries after WWII. For sure the unions have a roll in the efficiency of US automaking but most of the problems are how the companies treat the employees. Some employers have given benefits to workers in order to prevent unions from gaining a foothold.
